1897-1978
Born in Kagoshima. Graduated from Aoyama Gakuin Junior High School. Student of Arima Ikuma.
1928: Exhibited 23 works from European stay at the 15th Nika-kai Exhibition (Featured display) / Won the 1st Showa Oil Painting Encouragement Award
1957: Japan Art Academy Prize (Academy member from 1960)
1969: Received Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from French government
1976: Received Order of the Rising Sun, 2nd Class / Togo Seiji Art Museum established
1978: Passed away at age 80. Posthumously named Cultural Merit Awardee, Senior Fourth Rank.
Lived through Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras, perfecting a unique aesthetic style. Received Cultural Achievement Award from Paris.
Highly evaluated both domestically and internationally, maintaining strong popularity 30 years after his death.
