Biography: Born in Kagoshima in 1897. Graduated from Aoyama Gakuin Middle School. Studied under Arishima Ikuma. 1928: 23 works from his European period featured at the 15th Nika Exhibition; received the 1st Showa Painting Encouragement Award. 1957: Japan Academy of Fine Arts Award (member 1960). 1969: Received Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from French Government. 1976: Received Order of the Rising Sun, 2nd Class; Togo Seiji Museum opened. 1978: Passed away at age 80. Posthumously awarded Cultural Medal of Honor and court rank Shoshii. Lived through Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods, perfecting a unique aesthetic style. Received Cultural Service Award from Paris. Highly valued domestically and internationally; maintains strong popularity 40 years after his passing.
