Artist Biography:
1897–1978. Born in Kagoshima. Graduated from Aoyama Gakuin Junior High School. Studied under Arima Ikuma.
1928: 23 works from his European period specially exhibited at the 15th Nika-kai Exhibition; received the 1st Showa Yōga Encouragement Prize
1957: Japan Academy Prize (member from 1960)
1969: Received Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (French cultural decoration)
1976: Received the 2nd Order of the Rising Sun decoration; opened the Togo Seiji Museum
1978: Died at age 80. Posthumously awarded Cultural Meritorious Person and Senior Fourth Court Rank.
Completed a unique formal aesthetic across the Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods. Received the Cultural Achievement Award from Paris. Highly regarded both domestically and internationally, maintaining high popularity 30 years after his death.
