Description

This vintage full acoustic model, the Gibson USA ES-175D in Sunburst, is believed to have been manufactured between 1970 and 1972. As shown in the photos, the front pickup has been replaced with a P-90, reported by the previous owner to be a 70s Gibson P-90, but details are unclear. It has a matured sound with great resonance, providing a very mild and rich tonal quality. The exquisite jazz tone is sweet and thick, as expected from a vintage instrument. The endpin, jack, front pickup, and frets are not original. Despite having been played, it offers a wonderfully boxy sound with a pleasant compression feel. ■■■ Specifications based on known details ■■■ Body Material: Laminated Maple Neck: 3P Maple Fretboard: Rosewood Pickup: Gibson 70s P-90 (F) / Gibson Original Humbucker (R) Weight: Approximately 3.1 kg Nut Width: Approximately 42.7 mm Serial Number: MADE IN USA 96712× Color: Sunburst Frets: About 50% remaining (subjective assessment). ■ Condition of the Product ■ * Overall, there are signs of aging including shine, weather checking, and scratches consistent with its age. * There are thin cracks around the tailpiece, but they do not affect playability at all. * Discoloration from sun exposure, dullness of metal parts, and some minor rust is present. * The neck is almost flat with no noticeable bow, but the truss rod is nearly maxed out. * The functionality has been confirmed. ■ Accessories ■ Includes a semi-hard case (in poor condition). Collector Commentary

The 1970-1972 Gibson ES-175D Sunburst is a revered model among jazz guitar aficionados, celebrated for its warm, rich tones and playability, which have only improved with age. Collectors value this vintage piece for its historical significance and craftsmanship, especially given the 1970s' pivotal role in the evolution of jazz music and guitar design. The alteration to a P-90 pickup certainly attracts a niche audience seeking that distinct sound, although it does slightly impact originality; overall, this example is priced competitively within the Japan market, where vintage Gibsons maintain strong demand due to their quality and local sourcing. Signs of cosmetic wear are typical for instruments of this era and lend character, but collectors should assess these factors closely, as they significantly influence long-term value.
