It's not an exaggeration to say this is museum-quality armor made for a shogun, crafted by the esteemed Edo period armorer, Akatsuki Masanobu. This armor features exquisite craftsmanship, with the helmet being a standout piece. Masanobu is recognized as a master of his era, known for creating intricate designs and is highly regarded within the Akatsuki school.
His work illustrates a remarkable attention to detail, with only a limited number of pieces surviving today, making this item quite rare.
This helmet uses well-forged iron, layered with a total of 32 plates, featuring a beautiful arrangement of stars. The craftsmanship extends to the crest and the front ornamentation which is beautifully detailed. Moreover, the lacquered eye shield and the decorative motifs on the returns of the helmet denote the helmet as an exquisite example of its kind.
The main body of the armor is from the Edo period and includes a green silk cord design and family crest. The gilded patterns etched on the body are also striking. This exceptional armor set includes large sleeves, unique faceplate designs, chain and leather gauntlets, as well as greaves made of iron.
Additionally, the original armor chest is part of this impressive set.
As seen in the pictures, the item shows some deterioration due to age, including fabric wear, slight staining, frayed threads, chipping of the surface coating, and wood deterioration; however, there are no significant damages. Personally, I believe the condition is quite good. Please note, the inner surface of the large sleeves shows signs of wear in the lacquer. (There is a risk that this may peel during transport. Your understanding is appreciated.)
