Rare Special Edition? Gibson ES-335 Studio with Ebony Fretboard? Gold Parts, Vintage 1991 without f-holes

1 / 1

Description

This is a Gibson ES-335 Studio model sold between the late 1980s and 1990s. Based on the serial number and POT date, it is presumed to be manufactured in 1991. Unlike later budget models, this Studio version was designed more as a performance model, with f-holes eliminated to avoid unwanted feedback. This particular unit features specifications not found in the catalogs of that time, including what is probably an ebony fretboard and all gold parts, suggesting it may be a special or custom order. While I cannot definitively state whether the fretboard is ebony, it appears similar to other ebony fretboards from the same era I own (this is subjective). There is a repair history of a crack on the neck just below the headstock (image 6), but I have used this guitar for several years since acquiring it without any issues with tuning or stability. The crack may not be noticeable in person as it is emphasized in the photo due to lighting (this is subjective). The original pickguard was missing, so I have installed a compatible replacement (including stay and screws). The model shows minor scratches and dings but presents a high-quality, luxurious appearance with its wine red finish and gold parts. It is difficult to ascertain how many original parts remain, but I believe everything is original except for the pickguard (this is subjective). I had it set up by a workshop, and the frets have 70% remaining, with no issues identified with the truss rod. Pickup resistance values are 7.69kΩ for the neck side and 7.92kΩ for the bridge side, and there are no scratch sounds from the POT (date 1991). The serial number on the back of the headstock is 92401390, and it weighs 4.16 kg. The only included accessory is the original hard case. Sound: The sound output is somewhat high with a responsive nature due to the ebony fretboard, yet it also provides a pleasant vintage character (subjective opinion). It pairs excellently with tube amplifiers (subjective opinion). The lack of f-holes greatly reduces the risk of feedback, which I have not encountered at all. Upon shipping, the hard case will be carefully packed in a cardboard box and sent in size 200. I am not an expert on instruments, so there may be oversights. Please refrain from bidding if you are particularly sensitive, and if you win, I request no claims or returns, as this is a used item. Note: Bidders with negative feedback or with fewer than ten feedbacks may have their bids canceled at my discretion. I have experienced issues with prank bids in the past, so I will also remove new bidders from participating, and I appreciate your understanding.

Collector Commentary

The 1991 Gibson ES-335 Studio is a notable example from a revered manufacturing pedigree, with its blend of high-quality craftsmanship and unique specifications, such as the potential ebony fretboard and all-gold hardware, making it a rare collectible. While the absence of f-holes enhances its performance capability by minimizing feedback issues, the model's limited production run in Japan appeals to serious collectors who appreciate its distinct character and luxe finish. Despite minor cosmetic wear and a documented neck repair, this instrument remains a sought-after piece in the vintage guitar market, sitting at a competitive price point for its condition and rarity. Overall, this example exemplifies the craftsmanship of 1990s Gibson models and retains the authentic character valued by collectors in Japan and beyond.
