[Unopened 1975] Hello Kitty Early Design Button Set of 5, Side Sitting, Showa 50, Sanrio, Ultra Rare, Cute

1 / 1

Description

This is a set of five buttons featuring Sanrio's Hello Kitty design. They have been stored unopened in my family's sewing box for a long time. It appears they were either purchased or received as a gift but were never used. The design depicts Hello Kitty sitting sideways, representing the earliest designs from her inception in 1974. The front of the paper package features Hello Kitty with the label "KITTY BUTTON", while the back displays Sanrio's logo at the time along with the text: "Manufactured by Sanrio Co., LTD 1570JTBU9010 1975 SANRIO CO.LTD". Notably, there is no "Hello Kitty" logo as we know it today—research indicates that this trademark was not registered until the mid-1990s. The absence of a JAN code suggests this was produced before barcodes became widely used. Given the overall appearance, particularly the font, it is safe to say this is not a reproduction but an authentic item from Hello Kitty's early days. As far as I can assess through the packaging, there are no chips or print fading. While I am not making any guarantees, I believe the buttons are likely free from sun damage based on their storage conditions. The staple securing the package shows some rust. Please note that this item is being sold as-is, with no claims or returns accepted. Thank you for your understanding.

Collector Commentary

This 1975 Hello Kitty button set, showcasing one of the character's earliest designs, is a rare gem from the iconic Sanrio franchise that first captivated audiences in 1974. The absence of a JAN code and the distinct packaging indicate its production during a transformative era in Japan's pop culture, making it a significant find for collectors focused on the history of kawaii culture. Given Sanrio's pristine reputation and the premium placed on unopened items in excellent condition, this set not only highlights Hello Kitty's enduring legacy but also reflects the evolving collector demand for early merchandise. With a current bid steeped in the collectible market's appreciation for such vintage pieces, the valuation aligns with other rare Showa-era collectibles in Japan, affirming its status as a worthy addition to any dedicated collection.
