Vintage 1964 Gibson SG Special - Minor Modifications, Great Sound!

1 / 1

Description

Thank you for viewing this listing. Serial Number: 244089 This is a real vintage 1964 SG Special. It weighs 3.2 kg, which might be a bit heavy for a Special. The red color of the body may not be accurately captured in the images, but it retains more red tones in person. The neck is straight with no breaks or repairs; it does have some dimples on the lower frets, but approximately 50% of the frets remain. I have uploaded a demo video on YouTube. I replaced the strings with Gibson 10-46 for this listing. The demo video was recorded the day before with the old string setup. For more demos, you can search: 1. 'Gibson 1964 SG Special w. Fender Hot Rod Deluxe' ★Original expected points★ - The guitar body - The pickguard is slightly warped (there is a crack around the bridge area) - Pickup cover (UC-452-B) - Pickup mounting screws - 2 pots from 1963 and 1 pot from 1964, while one hidden by solder appears to match the others but cannot be verified due to its condition. - The bridge is believed to be original (TPBR engraved on the back, with movable allen screws), however, the studs have been replaced. - The truss rod cover appears original. ★Modifications★ - As shown in the images, holes were drilled for a stop tailpiece. This was present when I acquired the guitar. If the arm's handle is removed, it can be used similarly to the SG used by Derek Trucks. - When acquired, an Epiphone tremolo tone was installed which I replaced with a Maestro arm detached from a 2020 Murphy Lab 1964 SG Standard Ultra Light Aged model, giving a vintage feel. - There are three holes for the tremolo tone hidden beneath the Maestro arm. - The tuning pegs changed from double to single line mid-1964; these appear to be single line and may have been altered, though it is uncertain given the mix of 63 and 64 pots. - The nut and frets were not evaluated by me, indicating a possibility of replacement. - The pickups are not original and come from a 1968 reissue of Les Pauls with clear bobbins (commonly known as laid back). - I lost a screw while taking photos of the truss rod, but I will provide it with a similar size screw temporarily until I locate it. Bids from those lacking an understanding of vintage items are declined. There is minimal crackling; however, as shown in the demo, there are no sound issues! Included is a carbon-type black hard case (non-original). The case will be packed securely with cushioning and cardboard to prevent damage during shipping. (Updated on 2026-05-20 09:03:00) This item is also listed on other sites and will be removed from auction if sold there. Thank you for your understanding. (Updated on 2026-05-20 10:12:00) This model features a wide neck of 42mm and a 17-degree head, typical before changes were made in 1965 to 40mm and 14-degree head designs.

Collector Commentary

The 1964 Gibson SG Special is a cornerstone of rock history, celebrated for its P90 pickups and versatile sound, which has made it a coveted piece among collectors. Vintage models such as this one, particularly those with original parts and minor modifications, maintain a robust demand, as they reflect the craftsmanship of an era that marked a significant evolution in guitar design. The condition of its frets and the presence of non-original parts will be key factors influencing its value in the Japanese collector market, where authenticity and provenance are paramount. With prices reaching upwards of ¥580,000, this listing represents a fair investment for an instrument that embodies the essence of mid-60s rock culture and craftsmanship.
